Did You Know About “Tapering” for Steel Wire Ropes?
What are the benefits?
By creating a tapered rope end, strand separation is effectively prevented, which can otherwise occur after cutting the rope or during assembly. This technique is especially valuable for ropes used in lifting systems, mobile cranes, and wedge socket terminations. It facilitates the insertion of the rope into components, ensuring safe and precise installation.
How is tapering performed?
The process is carried out using a tapering machine, which clamps the rope between two electrodes. An electric current is then applied, heating the rope to an incandescent state.
Once completed, the rope end is sealed, compact, and tapered. A unique feature of this process is the intense green glow emitted by galvanized ropes during heating!
What are the alternative rope-end finishing methods?
Alternative methods include:
-
Taping, which is quick but only effective for certain rope types.
-
Wire binding, used to compress and hold strands and wires in place, though it inevitably increases the rope’s end diameter.
